Sky tests

From these clouds I will develop a final matte paint of the sky .

I’ve tried to keep a very soft touch to the clouds with a very painted style. With soft atmospherics but with a ton of different lights going on between the *clouds* looking at the paintings I realise the clouds in splay resemble a soft marble style look. REMINDER FOR THE TEAM , The matte paint is going to be HUGE so the clouds will not look so compact and Crowed it will look very smooth and ambient.

Clouds for SPLAY

These references have been collected from numerous sites & artists.
I’m to create a Cloud/sky matte paint for SPLAY, whether or not it will be used in the animatic or possibly the final film I do not know but for now I’m creating something that captures Splays Atmospheric features and emotions.

Splays clouds should be very subtle but have a lot of character despite how subtle they are. The colour should be slightly brown tinted bronze BUT the chances are the clouds might end up being pure tones and shades . The Clouds must be purely painted with as much emphasis on the brush strokes as possible ( Corel Painter X for this maybe?)

Pre-Production Scenes/layouts for Splay , Whack'd & Polished Off (not including drafts)

Layout idea 2

This is what the motel is apparently going to look like . Seeing this motel within the scene I can seriously say this place looks too posh for the likes of what is going to happen in the film . I think a drastic change in what this place is going to look like is needed . Unless we make it look more run down. Also I think the fact it’s elevated and you need to go upstairs to reach the target is going to be a right pain.

Other than that this is an unfinished layout sketch because I need the team to look at it, so we can then decide where stuff is going to be placed PROPERLY. If whether the barren dessert with backdrop city is a good idea? with a building that looks like this ? Maybe the location needs to be even more urban . UNLESS the building is made more tropical looking with cheap tacky American tourist style fixtures. This is very important.

Idea 1 Whack'd

Layout concept 1 for the Whack’d team . I’m going to continue & develop this image and upgrade the layout, changing the building shape . As plans for a building have now been drafted up and finalised . This means I can proceed to do a finalised finished concept for the team, which later on they can use as a proper reference when it comes to 3d building and cameras

Wednesday 21 October 2009

Had a talk with the group ( Whack’d ) On the Monday about the concept ( it’s now complete , i'm working on re-doing the building now) We have pretty much finalised a story, as well as acting out the scenes that need doing and how long they will take in the actual film.
Also me and Sam discussed together extra features that could be added to the exterior of the motel, Palm Trees etc .
I’ll upload the picture shortly, as I’m currently tweaking the concept as i type.

Things to do

-Sky for Splay
-Re-do concept for Whack'd (layout is fine, but building shapes need to change) I'll finish the one im doing atm then do another.
-Help Whack'd on some detailed shots for when they need them (animatic?)
-Make sure i have free time spare just encase Polished Off and Splay need my help.
-Focus on Whack'd
I'll need to ask Sam what else he wants me to do after i've completed my current task.

Whack'd layout design

This 1 layout design is for Whack’d
(which could also work as an establishing shot just after the bike/car drives past on the road)
Ok lets start talking about the composition.
Layout;
The layout differs from what the original idea was, this is simply because I felt like showing some variety between the artwork . Most importantly though was how the scene was set up (explained below)
Ok, the original design had a massive petrol station at the end of the motel, though it looked ok it completely and utterly destroyed the vanishing point of the buildings shot ( looking down the road) having a shot that’s on open land that’s VERY vast and having a city in the backdrop, I decided it would be best for me to put the petrol station at the start on the right & slightly out of shot (start with the biggest buildings & less important story wise) otherwise
1:the scene looses its vanishing point
2:if the petrol station is on the end, it stops the motel pointing towards the city. This is bloody important as we want the motel to say to us ( hey look, the city is far , come and stay at the motel.)
3.It means the audience doesn’t get confused, it's not an important building, it doesn’t need to be directly in shot.
---------------

I’m going to toon this up today and try give it more character while aiming to put some colour in.my objective is to try & get a final piece that will go into the animatic and that will roughly set the camera shot up. Hench.

Monday 12 October 2009

These two images are for SPLAY and Polished Off.
Polished off:
The colour theme for this isn’t exact ,as the team is still working on what they want the colours of the characters to look like. Also the room is missing the gear which is next to "ed" (the character) thankfully it doesn’t change the atmosphere of the scene (the objects could just simply be out of shot)
Splay:
This was something Phil asked me to do last week and i managed to start & finish it last night. This picture is to show Splay stuck in the doorway. I feel like i could have put more emphasis on the scale and the differences between width and length between Splay and the rest of the characters(more importantly the environment) but I feel it works enough as it is for a concept (which may go into the animatic).

update

I’ve nearly finished a conceptual piece for Polished off. It should be going into the animatic when it’s finally complete. Also yet to finish another concept for SPLAY this should be going into the animatic as well.
I also intend on starting the environmental piece for Whack’d , the other team I’m working with.

Monday 5 October 2009

This concept is nothing special and is most definitely not my usual style ,but I felt it was a good way to communicate the characters grim feelings before the fiasco that was to come shortly after . It’s defo good to have something different amongst work, break up the patterns and have a wide range of styles and separate away from generic ways of working . If the team keeps up the way it’s going at the moment the Final film for BOTH Splay and Polished off will be absolutely fantastic. Fingers crossed.
I’m currently working on a picture dan drafted up (I’m colouring it in and giving it all the details he & the team wants). (By the looks of it) the design of the room has been made, so it’s vain to carry on doing conceptual pieces of what the room *could* look like. Though of course it still isn’t ruled out as we have plenty of concepting time left .

Polished off concept

Atm I’m developing a night time scene for Polished off .. Bloody hard lol . I’m having to draw this utterly different to what i usually do, as well as my approach to the painting . Should be complete by tmoz. I have a feeling I’m going to have to stay at home to get this one done as I have no way to finish this without my Wacom Cintiq tablet . Balls .
